Sheena The Darak’na Queen Of The Jungle

Katlego Mathebe Starring As Sheena The Darak’na Queen Of The Jungle

“I am lioness

I want adventure and danger

claws on cracked dry ground, sinking

deeper with every step”

– Extract From Katlego ‘Katt’ Mathebe’s “I am lioness”

Initially for this exhibit I just Wanted to do lions(because the model had written a poem about lions), but i couldn’t gather enough lion pictures(with corresponding poses that is) so i collected pictures of different ‘katts’ (pun intended), and entitled the exhibit “Wild Katt” However I still couldn’t gather enough relevant images(frustrating really, why couldn’t these wild life photographers get the right shots, I mean how hard can it be, lions pout all the fucken time) Okay maybe they don’t, but whatever.

Sooo…

“Sheena Queen Of The Jungle” remember that TV series? with that white blonde girl who was raised in the wild by a black witch priestess? she could transform into any wild animal? Etv sunday, 10:30am? remember?! Yes that one.

And right there, that was it, my “inspiration” for this exhibit.

I Present Katlego Mathebe As Sheena The Darak’na Queen Of The Jungle

“Lemons” by Katlego Mathebe

“Lemons” By Katlego Mathebe

With Passion In Their Eyes
They Manoeuvre To The Couch
Then She Slides Her Way Into Her,
Moans.

So I Asked A Friend Of Mine, Katlego Mathebe, To Write Me A 3 Line Poem Titled Lemons, Without Using The Words: “lemon, yellow, round, fruit, citrus, tart, juicy, peel, and sour.”

And There It Was.

To Those Still Confused(as I was), “Lemons” Is Also A Slang Term, Used In Australia, For “Lesbians”.

I Had To Get A Picture To Go With This Brilliant Piece, So I Remembered This One Time I Was Floundering Through The Net And I Stumbled Into An Exhibition By Zanele Muholi Entitled “Of Love & Loss” With Beautiful Lesbian Images(see link below or google her and put ‘lesbians’ next to her name on your search filter), So I Went Back And Searched For That And Stole The Perfect Pictures(hopefully Ms.Muholi doesn’t sue me or anything like that for publishing her images…I don’t have money Ms. Muholi…I Did Acknowledge And Credit You Though, see link below )

Okay So I Couldn’t Find The Direct Link To The Gallery, But Do Google It.

The Xhosa Girl Next Door (Sphesihle Makrune)

This Week’s Featured Model, Sphesihle Makrune, A 19 Year Old Fashionista, From Fourways.

Contrary To What The Pictures Suggest, Sphesihle Is Actually Very Camera Shy(not really a ‘fashionista’ trait but anyway…) However She Is A Very Loud And Animated Girl(well as most Xhosa girls are).

Many will quickly label Sphesihle’s style as “vintage” or “retro”, as loosely as that label is used it’s really an intricate play on pattern and drape, simplicity conveyed with a strong pinch of confidence.

Black Mother Woman by Audre Lorde 1971

I cannot recall you gentle
yet through your heavy love
I have become
an image of your once-delicate flesh
split with deceitful longings.

When strangers come and compliment me
your aged spirit takes a bow
jingling with pride
but once you hid that secret
in the center of your fury
hanging me
with deep breasts and wiry hair
your own split flesh
and long-suffering eyes
buried in myths of little worth.

But I have peeled away your anger
down to its core of love
and look mother
I am a dark temple
where your true spirit rises
beautiful     tough as chestnut
stanchion against nightmares of weakness
and if my eyes conceal
a squadron of conflicting rebellions
I learned from you
to define myself
through your denials.

One of the SB faithful come thru telling me there was a tabloid style mag with a close up of yours truly blessing the covers at the House Of Vans. So I carved down there to see wagwarn. And there it was, Didn’t even know, stoked. It was from a shoot me and my Susgang mandem did a while back for a lifestyle magazine called Cheaptricks, sponsored by Globe. Seeing It makes me want to keep things moving because I feel like we’re on to something. Ings mate we shouldn’t of told you to give it back, hindsight.
